The series consists of files of the Executive Secretary of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1959-1972. The majority of the files pertain to James Forman's administration, there is very little material on the tenure of Stanley Wise, and no material on Ruby Doris Smith Robinson. Includes mainly correspondence, but there is also staff and personnel reports, memoranda, financial records, newspaper clippings, and printed material. The records reflect (especially James Forman's) virtually every aspect of the organization and its development. The Stembridge and King files, although small in size, contain significant correspondence and other material pertaining to the early months of SNCC and its relationship with other organizations during its formative stages.

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was created in 1960 at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Its purpose was to coordinate the student protest movement.
